St Leonards Art School

St Leonards Art School runs a six-week rolling painting courses from its studios on Maze Hill in St Leonards.

Rudiments of Painting, led by celebrated local artist James Mackinnon, covers all the core skills for aspiring painters – from sketchbook development and colour theory to working with watercolours, acrylics and oils – the perfect opportunity to try painting for the first time or even brush up on existing skills.

Originally from London’s East End and now based in Hastings, James Mackinnon is a third-generation artist known for his detailed, evocative cityscapes and architectural paintings. He describes the course as a crash course in painting and drawing, covering all the associated mediums.

Students can choose from daytime or evening weekly classes Tuesdays: 6  pm – 8.30 pm  or Thursdays: 10.30 am – 1 pm.

In addition to adult courses, the school hosts innovative Kids’ Art Clubs for children aged 7 and up. These dynamic sessions focus on building confidence and exploring different mediums, with convenient weekly slots available after school and on Saturday mornings.
