Developing Your Craft Writers Workshops
21 JULY 2026 - 08 SEPTEMBER 2026
A course to sharpen your writing, whatever stage you are at is running Tuesday mornings from 21st July to 8th September (10 am – 11.30 am). This highly praised eight-week workshop digs into the craft and technique of writing through close reading of short stories, novel extracts, essays and articles, with weekly exercises and plenty of lively discussion to spark ideas.
You will submit your own work and get supportive, constructive feedback from both the group and your tutor, including an extended editorial report twice in the term. It suits experienced writers and complete beginners alike, and any form is welcome.
You will want to set aside at least a couple of hours a week outside the sessions for reading and preparation and the term works whether you are joining for the first time or coming back for a second.
As for your tutor, James Young is a writer from Belfast whose short stories have appeared in the likes of The Stinging Fly and Wasafiri, and been shortlisted for the Sean O’Faolain and Fish prizes. He edits Short Fiction literary journal and is an award-winning translator. He is also the founder and director of The Hastings Writers Workshop.
Places are from £219.
