A major thematic exhibition exploring how our soils and seas are interconnected as part of a sophisticated web of life.
Edge is the first of two landmark exhibitions commissioned by Hastings Contemporary that respond directly to the gallery’s location on a shingle beach, exploring themes including ocean futures and sustainability. The follow-up exhibition, Horizon, will take place in autumn 2027.
Curated by The Land Gardeners, Edge spans the gallery with work from the early 20th century to the present day, by artists including Anya Gallaccio, Wolfgang Tillmans, Merce Cunningham, Barbara Hepworth, Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka, Jem Southam, Martin Parr, Susie Hamilton and Massimo Bartolini.
Framed by the point at which land and sea meet, the exhibition considers everything from biodiversity and the natural environment to our relationships with the coast – taking in leisure, coastal poverty and migration along the way.
